Quick Ways to Save on Energy Costs Starting Today

Quick Ways to Save on Energy Costs Starting Today

A recent study by the U.S. Department of Energy found that despite new homes being 30 percent larger, they consume roughly about as much energy as older, smaller homes. Although much of these savings come from advances in insulation technology and the use of energy-efficient home comfort systems and appliances, it also comes from small, common-sense actions such as turning off lights when they’re not being used. These modest actions can help you save on energy costs immediately.

What You Can Do Today

While cutting back on your home’s energy consumption is a long-term project, there are plenty of ways you can save on energy costs right away:

  • Replace your incandescent lights with more energy-efficient compact fluorescents (CFLs). These lights use only one-fourth of the energy that typical incandescent lights need. LED lights offer even bigger savings over time.
  • Adjust your water heater down to 120 degrees. It will reduce the amount of energy your water heater needs to operate, plus you won’t have to subject your hands to scalding hot water.
  • Use the energy-saving settings on various appliances, including refrigerators, washing machines and dishwashers.
  • Consider replacing those aging appliances with newer, more energy-efficient models.
  • Replace or clean the filters in your furnace, air conditioner and/or heat pump on a regular basis.
  • If you have a waterbed, keep it covered up. Making your bed first thing in the morning can cut its energy usage by one-third.
