At SSI Services, we are dedicated to understanding the technical aspects of the appliances we service, including refrigerators. Let's delve into the technical workings of a refrigerator.

The primary function of a refrigerator is to remove heat from the interior to keep food cold.

Key Principles of Refrigeration:

Refrigeration operates on two main principles:

  1. Expansion of gases leads to cooling.
  2. Heat will transfer from a warmer object to a cooler one, a concept from the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics.

Refrigeration Process:

Modern refrigerators use tetrafluoroethane (HFC), a gas that becomes liquid at -15.9 degrees Fahrenheit, avoiding the environmental harm caused by older refrigerants like CFCs.

The cooling cycle involves several steps:

  1. Compression: The refrigerator's compressor increases the pressure of the HFC, heating it up. This heated gas then passes through the coils, dissipating some heat to the surroundings.
  2. Condensation: The pressurized HFC cools down and transforms into a liquid as it travels through the coils.
  3. Expansion and Vaporization: The liquid HFC enters a low-pressure area through a valve, where it evaporates and turns back into a gas, absorbing heat from the refrigerator's interior.
  4. The gas then returns to the compressor, restarting the cycle.

This cycle is fundamental to all refrigeration systems, regardless of specific design differences.

SSI Services is committed to providing expert care for your commercial kitchen appliances, including maintenance and troubleshooting for refrigeration units.
